June - the month for sports
2006-06-22
Sorry about the lack of posts in here, it's been a busy month. I'll post more about that in next week's entry. But for now...
In case you’ve been living under a rock (or in North America) there is this little thing going on called the World Cup.
England is going football (soccer) mad.
Oh my god, the English are drama queens when it comes to footie. St George’s mighty eleven are though the group stage undefeated and in first place for the first time in like a millenia, so you would think they’d be happy right?
Wrong.
It’s a travesty. If you've been talking to any englishmen lately, you'd know that their offence is shit, their defence is shit and of course, (as usual) Owen Hargreaves is shit. Poor Hargreaves was booed before he set foot on the pitch. Well that's what the traitorous bastard gets for choosing England over his homeland. If he played for Canada like he was supposed to, he would never have heard a single boo from us. Of course, we probably wouldn’t be watching him either, but whatever. Soccer is nowhere near as good as hockey, deal with it.
Which brings me to the Edmonton Oilers. GODDAMMIT, did I want them to win. I have been staying up until 4am to watch the last couple games on NASN. My brothers-in-law, Matt and Joe, actually came down from Mancunia to watch Game 6 with me when the Oil pasted Carolina 4-zip.
Every time I have watched the Oilers in the playoffs, they’ve won, so there was no way I was going to miss Game 7. Everything was arranged. Alarm clock set, following day taken off work, pre-game Skype session with Darius scheduled, they were bringing home the Stanley Cup if I had anything to say about it.
Too bad I forgot how hard it is to wake up at 1am when you’ve fallen asleep on the couch at 10:30. You don’t often wake up at 1am... go to sleep at 1am, sure, but trying to pull your face off the pillow at 1 is like trying to pull your head out of hardened concrete. So yeah, I missed the first period sleeping.
I’m convinced they lost because of me... shit, sorry boys.
